Tuesday Morning Class

Watercolor and gouache on masonite primed with Kilz 2 and prepped with Absorbent Ground.

Continuing Watercolor (November/December 2013)

I continued work on the lizard adding color, light values, and dark values and creating texture with salt (add salt when the paper is still shiny but not a puddle).  I added a little detail to the background and shadows to the rocks.  I then worked on adding detail, shadows, and texture to the lizard.  It needs a little more work, but it's close.

Continuing Watercolor (November/December 2013)

I have been working on the background adding dark shapes, sharpening up edges, working on details on the berries and leaves, etc.

I have added a light area back in (with gouache and watercolor) and added a few more details on some berries.

I have added color to the left of the car by the trunk.

I have added more color and a whole lot of details and values.  I have been sharpening up the edges and making choices about darks and lights to create contrast in the painting (so that the car pops forward visually).

This started with the blue/green (pthalo green and pthalo) background.  I wet the paper and dropped in the color working wet-n-wet.  _ used Oxide of Chromium mixed with aueolin for the cactus shapes.  After that dried I wet the bottom background and put in a yellow color (burnt sienna and aureolin mixture) as well as a little red and blue gray and then I used sanding (watercolor pencils and sand paper).  Then I worked on the lizard adding the blue/green (pthalo green and pthalo blue) and gray (pthalo blue, pthalo green, alizarin, van dyke brown), dropping in some of the yellow background color and then adding salt for texture.  Pay attention to the shadows on the lizard.

Continuing Watercolor (November/December 2013)

I have added a few leaves in the back and will ad even more as I go making the background mostly medium and dark shades.

I wet and dropped in color on the trunk (sienna brown and cerulean).  While still wet I 'sanded' in some texture using sand paper and watercolor pencils.  I wet the roof, dropped in color, and added salt while it was still wet but not a puddle (indigo, cerulean, sienna, and a little viridian).  Next I mixed a dark brown (try sienna and indigo) and added the darks in the windshield.  I varied the value of these darks and added a little red in some areas.  I darkened the background a little on the right side.  I will most likely do a little more of that next class to 'pop' the truck forward.

11/21/13

Continuing Watercolor (November/December 2013)

I worked on the background adding darker leaves (alizarin, pthalo green, and salt).  I may add some medium value leaves as well and leave only a small amount of the yellow showing.  Not sure yet (so many options).  I added a few shadows to the leaves.  They need more values and details.  I worked on a few berries adding highlights, shadows, and details.  Need to add a glaze of yellow to almost all of them still.

Worked more on the face, especially the bottom and ear.  There is still more to do, but it is close.  Worked on the shirt and more on the hair.  More to do still but it is coming along.  Remember that value studies (or monochromatic paintings) are great for learning and improving skills.

For this we transferred the drawing, wet the background, and added in color leaning towards dark at the top and under the car (I used indigo, burnt sienna, oxide of chromium, viridian, aureolin,).  Before it dried I placed plastic wrap over it to get the texture.

Continuing Watercolor (November/December 2013)

This is a photo of what I worked on at home to get a few more leaves and berries further along.  I added shadows to the berries to make them look round.  I carefully added a green shadow (could do a red with green in it as well)  for a cast shadow to make the berries in the back look as if they are behind the others and the leaves.

This is how it looked after class.  I have added darks and veins (with white gouache and dark green) as well as started the branches and added shadows and highlights to the berries.  I also added a glaze of yellow to one berry (bottom right).

I had added another layer of rubber cement and dark to the hair, allowed it to dry, and then removed the rubber cement.  I started painting the hair adding detail with scribble marks and some dark areas.  I started on the face.  I started  with the dark shadow on the forehead and pulled the paint out from the shadow with a damp brush.  I was working down.  The bottom half of her face needs a little work and the hair needs more organized 'scribbles' and details.

11/9/13

Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache (September/October 2013)

Acrylic.  I added quite a bit more values, details, and color  Lots of shadows and highlights.

11/6/13

Continuing Watercolor (November/December 2013)

First transferred the drawing onto the paper.  I then wet and added yellow to the background parts creating a 'road map' to help determine background and foreground.  Next I added red to the berries trying to save the white highlight.  I added a yellow green to the leaves (also tried to save the highlights, oopps...).  Next, after it was dry, I started to add a darker red around the outside of the berry to give it form (I have done a few).  I then used a darker green (viridian as well as aureolin and alizarin dropped in a bit) and started shaping the form of the leaf.

First We transferred the drawing.  I wet the paper and added a wash of the color I will use for the entire piece (van dyke brown and indigo mixed).  It will be a value study or monochromatic piece.  I also used a little salt for texture (add salt when the paper is shiny, not puddled).  After it was dry I added rubber cement to the hair, dribbling in the direction of the hair.  After that dried I added more grey.  Allowed that to dry and added more rubber cement, dried that and added more grey.

11/1/13

Continuing Watercolor (September/October 2013)

I added quite a few more darks and kept adding details and sharpening things up a bit.  I may be done although I found a few tiny things I may fix/add.

10/27/13

Exploring Gouache (August 2013)

I added more lights and darks as well as details.  I also warmed it up with some yellow.

Continuing Watercolor (September/October 2013)

I added darks, removed the masking, and added shadows and details.  It might be complete.  We'll see.  This was fun to do.

10/25/13

Continuing Watercolor (September/October 2013)

I worked on the negative painting to pop the front leaves forward.  I added masking for the veins of the leaves (it adds an interesting linear pattern).  I worked on one leaf (left side) adding more color and texture.

I removed the masking and started 'fixing' it (it often needs to be fixed when used - either straightened, thinned, or incorporated).  I worked on the table and shadow.  It needs just a little more work - values, details, refining.

Acrylic & Gouache (September/October 2013)

Acrylic.  I started adding the dark background to pop the flowers forward.  I plan to focus the dark in a diagonal path.

I worked on the center of one of the flowers.  think - values, values, values!

I starting using white to add highlights and mixed a dark red for the shadows.

Gouache.  I added the original washes of color and value.

Colored Pencil (September/October 2013)

I added color and value to the face (sienna brown, scarlet lake, canary yellow, black, peach, light peach, white).  I used greens on the background and melted them with Goo Gone gel (chartreuse and dark green).  I added more color to the hair and then used black.  I used white on the highlights (it will need more or I can erase some highlights if that works better).  I used true blue and indigo on the shirt.  There is quite a bit of finish work and detail to add, but it's on the right track.

10/17/13

Continuing Watercolor (September/October 2013)

I added the bottom table and the shadows and added some more darks to the bowl.  When I added the blue to the table I wet up into the gray background and let the blue go into that as well.

First I wet the paper, added color, added salt (when shiny and not a puddle) and then put the plastic wrap on top and 'squished' it to make the texture smaller.  After it was dry I removed the salt and plastic wrap and transferred the drawing.  I started putting in the darks, negative painting, so the foreground leaves will emerge.  After the paper is very dry I will use some masking fluid to put in some veins.

This is the masonite, primed with Kilz 2 primer, prepped with Absorbent Ground (Golden Acrylic).  I wet the surface, dropped in color and let it run.  I added salt, laid it flat and let it dry.

Aqueous Acrylics and Gouache (September/October 2013)

Gouache.  I added some highlights with white to her shirt and face.  I worked on the eye and the hair a little as well.  I started to add shadows to the shirt.

Gouache.  I started to add lights and darks to the local color under painting.

Then I added the red to the cranberries.  Next I mixed a brown and used it and black and yellow or red to put in the shadows

Gouache.  First I wet the surface and put in the yellow/brown color.  After it was dry I transferred the drawing.

10/16/13

Colored Pencil (September/October 2013)

I worked on the face a little more.  I started to add a background.  Adding a background is optional as sometimes they look great with just the color of the paper.  The background would need more 'shaping', but it's a start.

First I drew the values on the face with  sienna brown and the clothes with true blue.  Then I melted the color with Goo Gone Gel (it's orange).  I started adding color - indigo, red, yellow and melted again.  The next step is to add the finishing color and value.

Continuing Watercolor (September/October 2013)

I worked on the shirt, adding darks and details (it needs more).  I added yellow to the hat and scrubbed out a little more white on the front of the hat.  I added more dark to the face and hair as well as a red glaze.  I then scrubbed and lifted highlights out of the face and hair.

I used masking (the greenish stuff) to block some white.  I mixed a gray and painted the background and into the bowl.  I am moving from area to area treating each area as a little abstract painting.

Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache (September/October 2013)

Acrylic.  I have added more darks and color and started adding the texture of the fur.  I used white on the eye and when it was dry painted it bright yellow.  It needs to be shaded.

Gouache.  I have added more darks and color.  I need to add the texture of the fur.  I used white on the eye,  it needs to be painted  bright yellow and then shaded.

Acrylic.  I used a dark red to tone down the texture of the background and to darken the background.  I also used the dark red on the hair.

Gouache.  I added dark blue in front of her face to pop it forward.  I added brown to the hair.

Acrylic.  First I painted the 'local color'.  Next I started to add the highlights and shadows with white and dark purple.

Gouache.  I painted the local color.
