Continuing Watercolor (Jan/Feb 13) - Sertoma

This is the paper with the exercises on them.  The bottom is two layers of rubber cement (not removed yet), the top right is salt, the top left is saran wrap.  All of them have a wash over them of the dark mixture (permanent alizarin and phthalo green).

I worked on the head area, on some of the feathers, and added a dark in the background.  There are still adjustments to be made as far as values and details.

I wet the background and added color.  The woman  and clothing still needs more details and value adjustments.

Tuesday Afternoon

Colored pencil.  I added more layers of value (dark and light) as well as color and detail.  I used sienna brown, black, true blue, white, and dark brown.  Think values, values, values!

Acrylic.  This is the first pass of acrylic on the hawk.  I first painted the background blue.  Then I mixed several  values of brown and quickly laid in the hawk (very wet paint).  I did the white and black areas as well.  Then ext step will be to adjust the values and add details.

Tuesday Morning

This is the demo of the acrylic exercise.

Acrylic.  This is local color - paint the green pepper flat green, we will add values and detail next.

Mixed Media (Jan/Feb) - Sertoma

Mixed Media (Jan/Feb) - Sertoma

Acrylic on watercolor paper.  I wet the paper and used pthalo green and ultramarine blue.  I made the strokes horizontal as this can be used as a water background for the duck.

This started as half of an old abandoned watercolor painting (of a building).   I have superimposed the duck over the old painting.  I did the beak in colored pencil and the white part is gouache as is a little of the background.  This has a way to go yet, but the start is interesting.

Acrylic and rubber cement.  This started as a mess of demonstrated splotches and some written notes in pencil.  I then did a layer of dribbled rubber cement.  When it was dry I did washes of acrylic (several reds, blue, and yellow).  I will do several more layers.  This has potential to be the background for a new piece.

Watercolor and rubber cement.  I dribbled rubber cement on paper.  I did washes of watercolor (new gamboge, aureolin, permanent rose).  I will do several more layers and it will become a possible background for a piece of art.

Acrylic, salt, and saran/plastic wrap on paper.  I wet the paper, added color washes  salted it, and laid the plastic wrap on top until mostly dry.  This would make a great background for the tree (or anything really).

Pen & ink, colored pencil, and half of an old abandoned watercolor painting (of a building, the other half of the duck above)   This is the very beginning of the tree on the old painting.

Watercolor, salt, and saran/plastic wrap on paper.  I wet the paper, added color washes  salted it, and laid the plastic wrap on top until mostly dry.  This would make a great background for the tree (or anything really).

Continuing Watercolor (Jan/Feb 13) - Sertoma

I worked on her skin using sienna brown and indigo mixed on dry paper.  I worked from the darkest area pulling the color out (remember to wash out paint and wipe brush on the towel or else you will get blossoms as you pull the paint out).  I used a mixture of new gamboge and sienna on her scarf and apron.  I worked on dry paper and worked the paint from dark to light.

The first layer was wetting the paper, dropping in color, put saran wrap on it, let it dry, and transferred the drawing.  Next, I used rubber cement and the brush to lay in the texture for the feathers.  I also dribbled some on the background.  I let that dry and then painted a dark I mixed over the chicken. The next layer was a rose color over the entire painting.  Then, after dry, I did another layer of rubber cement (dribbles in the background and feather shapes on the chicken).  Then I did a layer of warm yellow on the background and a dark on the chicken.  I removed the rubber cement and painted a few shadows on the chicken and toned down the feather with a little color over the entire painting.

Sertoma, CW, Sept./Oct. 2012

Colored pencil over watercolor.  I worked on adjusting some values as well as added some warmer color.  I think it is complete now...

Tuesday Morning

Colored pencil on black paper.  I finally finished this from long ago.

Tuesday Afternoon

Colored pencil on Bristol Board.  Colors used so far - sienna brown, dark brown, black, true blue, indigo.  This is the very beginning and will receive many layers before complete.

Photos for class

Tuesday Aternoon

Acrylic.  I worked on adding texture and lights and darks to the hair.  I also added yellow to the background.    I added highlights to her neck.  The entire piece needs a few more lights, darks, and details.

Colored pencil.  I worked on the skin starting with peach and light peach.  I then went over it with scarlet lake (lightly) and yellow (very lightly) .  I added some shadows (dark brown and black).  It needs more work with lights and darks as well as details.

Tuesday Morning

Watercolor.  I fixed the areas around the head and arm that got out of hand...  I then added a wash of warm yellow to improve of the scrubbed places.  I added dark to the head to texture the hair (indigo and burnt sienna).  I also added dark to her body, it still needs some shaping.

Colored pencil.  I added  light to her clothing using light peach.  Then I did stripes of color  to begin the pattern (orange, true blue, chartreuse).  Then I added highlights with light peach and shadows with some black (carefully).  I started adding the black stripe pattern, it needs some work.  I added texture to her hair with black and light peach and some color (yellow and red).  Her skin was again - peach, then scarlet lake (lightly), then yellow(very lightly), then sienna, then peach or light peach for highlights and black or dark brown for shadows.

Continuing Watercolor (Jan/Feb 13) - Sertoma

This started by transferring the drawing onto the watercolor paper.  I wet the skin, mixed a brown (sienna and indigo) and worked on the values.  This was done on the face and the hand.  Remember for the hand, less is more..  I wet the fabric and used indigo to also lay in the values.

This started by wetting the paper, dropping in color (I used rose and new gamboge).  I then put saran wrap on it and pet it dry.  Nest, I used rubber cement and the brush to lay in the texture for the feathers.  I also dribbled some on the background.  I let that dry and then painted a dark I mixed over the chicken.  The entire beginning of this painting is loose and experimental.  Have fun!

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  I mixed a warm brown and painted over the other layers.  I mixed a blue (remember I added a little brown to the blue as it was too bright) and painted the cloth areas.  Later, after it was dry, I started adding highlights to the skin and ribbon.  I used very wet solutions of pure white and white with a little bit of local color (the color of the object).

Colored pencil.  I covered the cloth with true blue and used white for the highlights and indigo for the shadows.  The red of the paper tones down the blue a little.

Tuesday Morning

Colored pencil on black paper.  I started this with peach to establish the values.  Over this I added a light layer of Scarlet lake and then a little canary yellow.  I then used light peach and white for the highlights and dark brown and black for the shadows.  I added a little bit of true blue as well.

I mixed a brown (sienna and indigo), wet the skin and hair areas, and painted the values with the brown.

1/10/13

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic on  primed Masonite prepped with Absorbent Ground.  First I wet the surface and added rose and yellow.  Next, I mixed a dark brown and started laying in the dark values.  I have a few more darks to add before the next step.

Colored pencil on dark mat board.  I used  peach to start laying in the light values.  I will do this first before adding color.

Tuesday Morning

Watercolor.  I wet the paper and dropped in Permanent rose and New Gamboge.  This will be the background for our painting.

Colored pencil on dark paper.  I first used peach to lay in the darks.  After class, on the right shoulder,  I added some burnt sienna, magenta, and white - I will show you how to add color in the next class (and there is more color to add).  I need to finish the light peach...
