All of these are done on Dura-Lar matte and none are 100% complete yet.

Thursday Morning Class

The acrylic horse.  I used a reddish brown and black and put that down first layer.  I used red (with a little yellow) for the halter with highlights of white. I used white with a little brown on the metal parts.  I added white and grey to the muzzle.  I used black, brown, and white for the eye.  Everything needs more detail, but it's on its way.

I put several layers on the background to lighten it as it was too close to value to the flower.  I plan to push it toward blue.  I added red to the flower and need to add some highlights.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April) - Sertoma

Here is the gouache magnolia.  I worked on a few petals and the center.

I worked on the back of the head (scrubbed), his legs, the grass, and a few feathers.

The car as I may possibly crop it.  I used indigo, burnt sienna, new gamboge,  and cobalt on the car.  The background is a bunch of mixed greens plus some aureolin, new gamboge, permanent alizarin, and cobalt.  I did a little negative painting (you can use masking instead).

The car, not cropped.

Tuesday Morning Class

The acrylic chicken.  I added some highlights and details and subdued the background some.  It needs quite a bit more work.

The color side on dura-lar.  I added more color to this side.

The view from the black & white side.

The watercolor chicken.  I added more darks and subdued the background (with gouache).  It needs more work.

The yupo rooster.  I lifted more areas and added a brighter red.

4/19/12

Thursday Morning Class

I worked on the lights and darks and warmed up the flower with yellow.

The next project

This is the start of the new project.  I did a background such as we did with the chicken.  Use any colors that you want and do texture if you want.  I have transferred the drawing and it's ready to  block in local colors and then work on the values.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April) - Sertoma

Here is the next project.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April) - Sertoma

This is a continuation of the gouache magnolia painting over the  quilt practice piece.  I worked more with the whit on the flower to establish more values.  I darkened and simplified/unified the background and worked a little more on the leaves.

I removed the masking and shaded and softened some of the edges the masking created.  I started adding grass around hs feet to ground the rooster (it needs more work) and glazed the background with yellow and over the pink around his head with viridian (to subdue it a little).  I added some darks and details on his head as well.

4/17/12

Tuesday Morning Class

Acrylic on Yupo.  I put wet, transparent color down and placed a crumpled wax paper on the paint and waited 5 - 8 minutes before removing the wax paper.

This is the watercolor chicken over the rubber cement background.  I worked more on adding values and color to the body and added some color to the head  (the red parts).

Watercolor  on Yupo.  I lifted out some highlights and added color and darks where needed.

This is the acrylic chicken over the rubber cement background.  I added values and color to the body and added some color to the head  (the red parts).

4/13/12

Thursday Morning Class

The acrylic hibiscus after painting over the value study.  I mixed some greens and made a loose background with the greens, some yellow,  and a little red painted on (wet paint) and then I lifted a little with a paper towel to add texture.  I did more work on the petals with a brighter red and some white paying attention to the values.  I worked on the stamen  with red and white and blobs of red, yellow, and white on the tip of the stamen.  I added some green dots as well (to have some background show through).

I worked on the head adding detail and texture.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April) - Sertoma

I did a few small goache areas to show how to adjust a painting with gouache when needed.

This is our quilt practice piece.  I have superimposed a magnolia on top using  white gouache and  green watercolor mixed with the white gouache to paint the flower and leaves.  I thin the gouache with water and allow the background to show through in some areas (and sometimes the color underneath mixes with the gouache).

The rooster painting started with masking on the white areas.  I have added the dark for his body  adding color as well as allowing some of the color underneath to show through.  I added a warm red to his head area as well.

4/11/12

Thursday Morning Class

This is the hibiscus watercolor.  I used a mixed green and some yellow as glazes over the background.  I used new gamboge and a red mixture to add more dark values and color to the petals (I have only 2 petals done this way so far).

Tuesday Morning Class

This is the rooster on Dura-lar.  This photo was taken from what will be the color side of the piece.  This is the  side that has the 'regular' pencil lines on it (the drawing).

This is the rooster on Dura-lar.  This photo was taken from what is the black & white side, the side we are working on with the black, white, and cool grey (50%) colored pencils.

This is the black hen watercolor.  I transferred the drawing and painted  her body in with a dark color, allowing the background to show through.

4/5/12

Thursday Morning Class

This is the acrylic hibiscus.  I mixed an orange color and a dark orange color and painted very wet.  I added light paint to the background.

This is the watercolor hibiscus.  I painted the values on the petals leaving white spaces.  I wet  the background and dropped in the color in an organic pattern.  I used salt for texture.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April) - Sertoma

This is the third pass on this painting.  I added some detail and some darks.  I scrubbed out part of the background with the 'magic sponge' (mostly around her head).  I added a glaze of yellow over the scrubbed part with a little red at the top and a little blue at the bottom.  I used a small 'scrubbie' to scrub out some highlights.

This is the experimental quilt piece.  I have added a few another layer of rubber cement, masking,  and then the paint.  I have added color and put crumpled wax paper on top (for texture), etc.  We will do a gouache or Chinese white painting (and some watercolor) on top.

This is the start of the rooster painting.  I masked out the white areas in the feather pattern.  I then wet the paper and dropped in viridian, aureolin, and quin. rose.  I also splattered some paint as well.

4/4/12

Tuesday Morning Class

This is the watercolor dogwood after I added detail and glazed parts of the flower with yellow.

This is the start for the Yupo painting.  I put color on (I did thalo green and alizarin) and then pressed crumpled wax paper on the wet paint and let it dry.
