Art & Ale W Jan and Feb 2019

I added a shadow under the cows, added more darks to the cow's head (needs more on the body), starting adding white with gouache to the cow (horns and spots) and added some glazes of color to the grass to tone down the texture.

I worked on the pilings adding shadows.  His head, wing and eye need more work.

I worked with a mixed dark on the beak, used white to further shade and then texture the flamingo. I also made a dark red ro shade and texture the flamingo.  I worked on the eye as well with the mixed dark and white gouache.  I still need to add the pupil...

DAC MM Jan and Feb 2019

I worked on a few strands of the hair, the clothes and added a few more darks and lights to the face.  This needs much more value work as well as details and refining.  In the hair I used color first, then black and then light peach and scribbled darks and lights to make the look of the braids.  There is a lot more to do.

I worked on the nose with mostly white and black layering and paying attention to the values. I worked on the area around the eye and the eye and a little on the mane.  I used cream, white, terra cotta and black.  I did a light layer of yellow due to the color of my paper.  My horse was looking pink due to the background color so I used yellow to tone the pink down.  Still have lots more to do, but it is well on the way.

2/15/19

I worked on the body of the cow.  I wet the cow and dropped in darks guiding them to shade the cow.  I will finish the darks and add the white with gouache in the next class.

I worked a little on the eye.  It still needs to be shaded a little.  I made the eye white with gouache and added a dark center.  I used a dark red to add shadows in the area around the eye.

I used my cool red and added a little warm red to it.  I wet the paper and dropped in the color.  I added a little salt for texture.  If the color is too light, do another round of the red.  After it dried I transferred the drawing with white transfer paper (grey will work as well).  I then used white gouache to start shading the flamingo.  I wet the areas I was working on and dropped in the white gouache and guided it. I made the white gouache more and less white with the amount of water I added to the gouache.   I mixed a darker red (did this using the red for the background and added a little blue and/or green to it until it was darker).  I wet the dark areas and dropped in the darker color.  I will add the feather textures and details later.  These first passes of values is to make the flamingo look round, to give it form.  Detail comes later.

I worked more on the turtle.  I am adding light to the tops. I am popping the areas around their heads more then their tails using more detail and values around the heads.  I will work in the background as needed for value and to calm any texture that is distracting.

I started this with cream and white laying in the light areas.  If this were not a demo I would have used the white and cream all over the face and hair and clothes before adding color.  Using the side of a sharpened terra cotta pencil I lightly shaded the skin.  Using black cherry, terra cotta and dark brown I started laying in the dark areas. (these colors can be substituted with black grape or indigo, sienna brown, dark umber or sepia for example).  I also added scarlet lake for some of the warm red areas and a little cadmium orange as well in some areas.  I then chose an area to do a little more finish work - the area around the nose, cheeks and mouth.  I used all the same colors as before with the addition of peach. I layered the colors paying attention to values and used the peach to smooth the areas.  I used the white in highlights and then added more darks as needed. I often work light, then dark, then light etc. as I layer which helps smooth it out.  But the layers in the beginning and middle of the process are light so I do not over saturate the paper. We will continue in the next class.

This started as the dark watercolor background.  I transferred the drawing with white transfer paper.  I then used white and cream to lay in the light values.  I will go over the next layers in the next class.

Durham Arts Council, Mixed Media, Jan & Feb 2019

I added more darks and more braids and hair.

I took an already textured watercolor paper that was a green blue.  I did about 4 layers of color because I wanted it to be dark.  I layered blue, orange, yellow and red on top of the blue green.  I wet the paper each time, added the color and then lightly spritzed the paper and sometimes splattered the color as well.  Then I transferred the drawing with white transfer paper (I have some for those who do not).

Art & Ale Watercolor Jan & Feb 2019

I added more darks and lights and some details with gouache to the pelican.  I added a few darks and some lights to the post.  The post still needs a bit of work as does the pelican (he needs an eye).
I started adding dark to the cow, did not finish it yet.  The easiest way is to wet the cow, make it damp, not puddled.  Drop in the dark.  Remember that the paint comes off the brush most at the place that you lift the brush.  So lift the brush in the dark areas.

DAC MM Jan & Feb 2019

I worked a little more on some of the turtle shells.

I worked a little on the red pepper and added the shadows underneath the peppers.

Rubber cement and on pass with paint.  have removed the rubber cement (usually leave it to do more layers).  See the texture handout for information on how to make these textures.

Plastic wrap.

Sanding.

Wax paper.

The under painting for the woman.  At home before class I wet the paper and dropped in orange and a cool yellow.  After that dried is when I should have transferred the drawing (I did it before and it was hard to see). I then used rubber cement to make texture in her hair and on her scalp.  I used a purple and blue to make the darks.  I dripped the hair strands.  Then I wet the paper around her head and added some color to the dark parts of her hair and added darks to her face as well (I used the purple and blue - the purple was quin. rose and ultramarine plus phthalo blue.  The blue was phthalo blue plus ultramarine mixed together).  I have more hair to add and a little more dark.  I will post again when I have it done.  For the shirt area I added a green (phthalo blue and warm yellow) and put plastic wrap to make the texture.

This is the same woman in process as a watercolor painting.  I mentioned it and a few of you wanted to see it.  I started it last fall and it's been sitting there until I can get back to it.  I have a bit more to do.
