Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

I finally had a chunk of time to really work on this and finish it.  I added lots of color, many details, darks, and some highlights were added with gouache.  I used a dark color (indigo and sienna) and used sienna quite a bit as well as permanent rose.  I may tweak it a little late after studying it, but for now it's done.

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

I worked on this piece some more.  I added details, warmed up the background, worked on the background flowers, etc.  It  needs more work, but getting closer.

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

Waterlily most likely complete (or very close...).  I added a lot of detail and  lights and darks since  we started this in class.  I did use gouache as I thought it was needed.

12/22/11

PCRD

Watercolor.  I added details to the top flower and cleaned up the edges.  I worked a little more in the background.  I mixed the brown from cobalt and sienna and added some perm. rose later.  I used salt on the center part.  I used the brown and some perm. rose to add the shadows to the petals (I pulled some of the color out from the center).

PCRD

Watercolor.  I worked in the water with blue, started adding color to the petals, and started adding color to the reflection.  I used perm. rose, aureolin and new gamboge, and cobalt.

PCRD

Acrylic.  We added colors in the background (it still needs more lightening) and cleaned up the top flower and added details.  I used white, yellow, rose, blue, warm green and mixed what I needed.

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

Worked on the background, the lily pads.

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

Worked on a few of the flowers and warmed up the background some.

12/13/11

PCRD

Watercolor painting.  I painted the negative space in order to 'pop' the flowers forward and start to add layers of color to the background.  I used mostly cobalt blue with a little sap green and magenta.

PCRD

Watercolor painting.  I used true blue to add values to the flower.  Paint the blue lighter than it needs to be.

PCRD

Acrylic painting.  I painted the negative space in order to 'pop' the flowers forward  and start to add layers of color to the background.  I used mostly blue with a little green and red (and a tiny bit yellow).

12/6/11

PCRD

Watercolor flowers.  I worked wet in wet (wet the entire paper first) and used perm. rose, new gamgoge, cobalt, aureolin, and sap green.  Keep the flowers light and mostly yellow.  I also sprayed the paper after putting color down so the colors would continue to blend for a little while.

PCRD

Watercolor waterlily.  I used cobalt to do a light value study as the under painting.  Make sure to use horizontal strokes for the water areas.

PCRD

Colored pencil waterlily.  I used true blue  for a 'gentle' value study on smooth white paper.  Make sure to use horizontal strokes in the water areas.

PCRD

Acrylic flowers.  I used a warm yellow, a warm red, a warm green, and blue (such as cobalt or ultramarine).  I put it on very wet, sprayed, and let the colors move and blend.  This is the under painting.

11/30/11

PCRD Class

I used a warm brown to warm up the horse and later added details and values (esp. light).  I lightened and warmed-up the background (I used a warm off-white).  I started adding back the bottom of the mane, but need to continue as it is not finished (I cut it off when fixing the background).

PCRD Class

I added more detail and warmth to the horse, especially the eyes, face, and muzzle areas.  The dark was a combo of indigo and burnt sienna.   I used burnt sienna to warm it up some.  It needs more details and darks, but it's getting close to complete.

PCRD Class

I lightened and warmed-up the background.  I darkened some areas on the horse and added more detail.  I fixed the 'chin' issue.  It's better but still needs a lot of help, lol...

11/23/11

PCRD Class

This is the watercolor version.  I mixed a dark (indigo and burnt sienna) to add dark values to the main and eye, nostril, 'chin hair', etc.  I added some burnt sienna to the horses face, ear, and body as well (just a little).

PCRD Class

The acrylic version.  I added a lot of lights on the face, mane, and background.  I added light and dark and some detail to the eye and other areas.

11/17/11

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

This is the first stepo in this painting, the value study under painting we started in class.

This is the second step, the addition of color over the under painting.  I added rose, new gamboge, indigo, and burnt sienna.  Add the color like you would a glaze.  Add a very wet mixture on dry paper.

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

This is after more details and more dark values.  It needs more work (values, values, values...), but is close to complete (the color differences between photos is due to the time of day I took the picture...)

PCRD Class

I added more dark values and details as well as highlights.  It needs more work, but is getting close to complete.

PCRD Class

I added some more color.  It needs detail and darks of course.

PCRD Class

I lifted for light areas and added some dark areas (which it badly needed).  It still needs more detail and dark areas, but is improving.

11/9/11

PCRD Class

This is the watercolor version after the start of adding color to the blue under painting.  There is a damaged area in the middle, it will be camouflaged later (and ignored now, luckily it's in a dark area).

PCRD Class

This is the acrylic horse after adding color, drying, adding brown and black for the mane and lifting out some light areas as I worked.  I also added a cream color to lighten the background.  It needs a lot more detail and value work, but it's a good start.

PCRD Class

Colored pencil, it needs a lot of detail and value work still.  I have layered a lot of color which I like.

PCRD Class

Colored pencil before class

PCRD Class

Colored pencil version of this project.  I got a little further and still have a little way to go.

PCRD Class

I was able to get a little further on the watercolor version of this project.  It needs a little more detail and some darks.

11/1/11

PCRD Class

Watercolor on stretched 140 lb. paper, I have only used cobalt so far (except for some color that accidentally got in there...).

PCRD Class

Acrylic on canvas board, I have only used blue so far.

PCRD Class

Colored pencil on pebble board, I have only used true blue so far.

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

Remember if you do nothing else, work on value studies such as how we started this project.  You will learn the use of values as well as learn to control watercolor (by controlling the water).  This needs more detail and I will post as I finish it.

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

This is well on the way, but needs more values and much more detail work on the truck.  I will post photos as I finish it.

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

Worked on this some.  I do not like her expression (the mouth still...), so I have worked on it again and it is better - I will post when I have a new photo.  I will keep working on her and posting.

10/25/11

PCRD Class

I worked on the arm and jeans as well as more on the skin and hair.  This is fairly close, but needs some detail work and adjustments to some of the values. (coat, hat, and jeans a little...).

PCRD Class

Colored pencil - I worked on shading the hat with white.  I will think about adding some color as well.

PCRD Class

Acrylic project - I worked on the hat, face, hair (a little) and background.  The first layer on the skin was added as was a layer on the hat.  I used a light color to tone down the background.  It needs a lot more work, but is well on the way.

10/24/11

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

This is the Hibiscus after adding some small details.  It can be considered finished although I will study it and probably do a few more tiny adjustments.

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

This is the piece after adding some color.  The values will need to be re-established at a later time, after adding the first layers of color.  It has a ways to go, I will post more photos as I work on it.  If you practice at home - do value studies - paintings in one color.  You will learn a ton from the process.

WC in Bloom - Sertoma Class

This is the 'value study' before adding color.  I worked on this at home for class.

10/19/11

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

This is the start of the horse.  I used cobalt only (and don't forget the WATER).  I will continue this and add some color to give you an idea of how to finish the piece.

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

I added some details and some darks.  I used a little gouache on the left side of the grill.  It still needs lots of detail work (I will do some next class).

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

For this I worked on fixing the face.  It reads better, but needs some sharpening up and some darks (I will do this next class).

Adventures in WC - Sertoma Class

Photo for the next project.  We will start this as a value study.
