Continuing Watercolor (A, S, O 2015)

After transferring the drawing and applying the masking and waiting for it to dry (see previous blog post) - I wet the paper and using the photo as a guide I dropped in color.  I used Ultramarine blue, permanent rose, cool yellow (lemon yellow or aureolin will work fine), and viridian.  I used these colors and their mixtures.  The wet paper allowed the colors to have soft edges and to intermingle a little.

This painting started with some sort of textured or colored background.  For mine I chose plastic wrap to create texture and red and blue for the color.  I wet the paper, dropped in the color, and laid the plastic wrap on while it was wet, scrunching it a bit.  I allowed it to dry.  The I mixed a dark (I used brown and blue for the dark) and used it to start painting the rooster's feathers.  I dropped a little blue into the wet dark paint.  I added a little watered down dark to his beak as well.

Rubber cement resist and sponging texture sample.  The top right corner is a sponging and the left side is rubber cement (which needs more layers).  I dribbled rubber cement, let it dry, and did a wash of light yellow.  After it was dry I added more rubber cement.  The next step is another wash of color which I will do next class.

Salt, wax paper, plastic wrap texture samples.  I wet the paper, dropped in color, and laid down plastic wrap on the right, wax paper on the bottom left, and salt on the top left.  The wax paper usually needs a book on top.  The salt goes on when the paper is still shiny, but not puddles.

Continuing Watercolor (August, September, October 2015)

This is the fence and flower piece.  I started by transferring the fence parts that showed (I might have embellished and/or added a few small ones).  I then masked those areas with masking fluid.

After the fence masking was dry, I masked the flower highlights.  I added small dots of masking for the flower highlights.  It is easier to see in person, but you  you can see it a little here in this photo.

Color Basics (August 2015)

Color schemes.  I did this with acrylic on paper (watercolor or gouache would work as well and oil on something other than paper would work too).  The top left is an analogous color scheme.  The top right is a split complimentary color scheme.  The bottom left will most likely be a triad color scheme and the bottom right will be a mixed gray color scheme.

Watercolor on paper.  Cool colors.  This could be done with acrylic and gouache as well (or oil on something other than paper).

Watercolor on paper.  Warm colors.  This could be done with acrylic and gouache as well (or oil on something other than paper).
