DAC CP ASO 2018

This project is using a limited palette on white paper using the white in the paper for our light values (no white pencil).  We will be using crimson red, canary yellow, peacock blue and indigo blue.  The first pass is to do a value study using the peacock blue in the green areas and crimson red in the red brown areas and both colors on the eye and other darks.  After that I went over the areas I had worked on with canary yellow except where there is white.  I am working on the light side and building up value and color as I go.
I started working on the upper part of the face, the mouth, chin and neck still need to be done.  I started adding darks and details.  I used terra cotta, dark brown, black, spanish orange and white.  I also still need to demo the clothes and hat and glasses (next class).

I showed how to use white gouache and scrubbing on this painting

I added color and value to the hat and clothes.  For the clothes and hat band I mixed a green using cool green and warm yellow.  I used ultramarine blue.  For the hat I used warm yellow and some of the brown I mixed for the skin (I mixed brown using 3 primaries).  I added shadows to the skin using 3 primaries to mix 2 browns.  I started adding a little color on the left side of the painting in the skin (green).  I will add more next class.  I also have a little more value and detail work to do.

On the skin I used peach, dark brown, terra cotta and some scarlet lake plus more white.  This is what I consider the base of the skin.  On the hat I used spanish orange, terra cotta, dark brown and white so far. The hat band is white and pomegranate so far.  I did a light layer of true blue and pomegranate on the clothing.  The color on the clothing is up to you.

This has 3 steps.  Step 1 - Work upright or tilted, wet on dry using a warm yellow, purple blue and a warm and cool red. I used very light color and started painting it on various areas.  I painted it over the subject and into the background (can see this all over except some places on the face where I have moved on to steps 2 and 3).  Step 2 - Mix a skin color with a red and yellow and a lot of water so it's light. Paint all of the skin with the very light skin color (can see this on her forehead).  Step 3 - Using the skin color start painting the values (can see this on the nose and cheek and chin on the right side of the paper).

Art & Ale Colored Pencil September 2018

Colored pencil on watercolor paper with an under drawing done with pencil and solvent (we're using rubbing alcohol as the solvent).  There are two ways to use the pencil and solvent.  One is to apply the colored pencil to the paper and use the rubbing alcohol and a paint brush or Q-tip to smear the pencil.  The second way is to use a small strainer, put something to catch the shavings of the pencil underneath (I use jar lids). Rub the pencil in the strainer and then add alcohol to the pencil shavings and swirl it with a brush.  Paint it in the area you want to add the pencil.  It looks a bit like watercolor.  I used grass green, yellow chartreuse and peacock blue on the leaves so far.  I used pomegranate and scarlet lake on the buds so far.  I used yellow chartreuse, a little grass green and terra cotta on the greenish part of the buds so far.  I used yellow chartreuse and terra cotta on the middle stem so far.  Remember this is the under drawing.

DAC Colored Pencil August, September October, 2018

I did more on the seed pod.  Remember start with dark brown and white and concentrate on the values (the darks and lights).  I used white, pomegranate and scarlet lake on the seeds and copenhagen blue in the shadows of the seed pod and on the seeds.  I used terra cotta on the seed pod and lightly in the background.  I used ginger root and yellow chartreuse on the bottom of the seed pod, lightly added.  You do not need either of these colors if you do not have them.  Substituting colors is fine as well.  Since this is a demonstration piece I am keeping unfinished areas for possible future demonstrations.  I would normally finish each step completely before moving on.

Start this with white and do a value study in white.  You can do one bird if you prefer.  If this were not a demonstration piece I would finish the white before moving on to color. When I added color I did so lightly using the side of the pencil.  I used copenhagen blue, light aqua, true blue and white in the blue areas.  I used canary yellow, spanish orange, terra cotta, dark brown, peach and white in the face and beak area.  I will go over the color areas with white as needed to reestablish the highlights.  Later I started adding black.  In the feathers note the dark to light gradation in the black and the color that is also in there (I used aqua).  I will demonstrate more next class.
