Aqueous Acrylics (May/June 2013)

Acrylic on primed masonite prepped with Watercolor Ground.  I transferred the drawing, wet the surface, and dropped in color.  While still wet - shiny, and not a puddle - I added salt.  This all dire and then I painted the bottom part of the beak and white around the eye.

Acrylic on primed masonite (primed with kilz 2).  I wet the surface and added a dark and some blue for the background.  After that dried a painted with white.  In two areas I painted color over the white.

5/7/13

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  I added more of the pink color as well as darks and highlights.  I added some details and the green parts at the bottom.

Tuesday Morning

Acrylic.  I worked on the flower, the butterfly, and the background (muted the green some).

Colored pencil.  I worked on the flower (which still needs help...), the background, and the dandelions.

5/6/13

Jackson, TN Workshop (2013)

Gouache over watercolor.  I have added more values.  It needs more darks and highlights and details.

Aqueous Acrylics (April 2013)

I have worked on the piece from class more adding values and details.

NCBG Acrylic and Gouache (April 2013)

Acrylic.  This is light over very dark.  It is of course the first pass and requires quite a bit more work.  I started with a white and yellow mixture.

Gouache.  This is a gouache over an abandoned watercolor painting.  The painting underneath is an unfinished  painting of a person turned on it's side.  I put the magnolia on top.  I do plan to show the person a little in the back and possibly to add another in the bottom right quadrant.  The flower and leaves of course need more work (details and values).

Acrylic.  This is the magnolia on the salt texture background.

Gouache.  This is light over very dark.  It is of course the first few passes and requires quite a bit more work (I started with a few layers of white and then added a yellow so far).

Acrylic.  This is a variety of textures, white stamped or pressed onto the dark background and a few dry brush marks as well.

5/1/13

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  I mixed magenta and yellow and painted the dark areas and shadows of the flower.

Watercolor.  I added more darks, more gouache, and some warm brown shadows.

Tuesday Morning

Acrylic.  I transferred the drawing and started painting the butterfly.  I used black with some red mixed in it for the dark, used some yellow for parts of the wings.  I used white and green for the body and parts of the wing.  The butterfly only needs a little more work.  I do need to put in the flower.

NCBG Acrylic and Gouache (April 2013)

Acrylic.  This started with an acrylic bubble wrap texture.  I transferred the drawing onto the surface and started painting.  It is in the beginning stages.

NCBG Acrylic and Gouache (April 2013)

Gouache with drops of rubbing alcohol.  Wet the surface, drop in color, drip in rubbing alcohol, allow to dry.

Gouache with straw.  Wet the surface, drop in color, lay down some straw, put something on top to hold it down, allow to dry, remove straw.

Gouache with plastic wrap.  Wet the surface, drop in color,  lay the plastic wrap on top, let it dry.  This can be somewhat manipulated into the shapes and direction you want as you are placing it on the paper.

Gouache with salt.  Wet the surface, drop in color, add salt when it's shiny but not a puddle, allow to dry, wipe/rub the salt off.

Acrylic with bubble wrap.  Wet the surface, drop in color, lay the bubble wrap on top, put something on top to hold it down, let it dry. This has 2 sizes of bubble wrap.

Acrylic with wax paper.  Wet the surface, drop in color,  crinkle the wax paper, lay the wax paper on top, put something on top to hold it down (like a book or two), let it dry.

Aqueous Acrylics (April 2013)

Acrylic.  I have worked more on the flower and the leaves.

Jackson, TN Workshop

Acrylic.  I have changed the background with glazes and have started on the leaves.  I have added more white to the flower.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April 2013)

Gouache on watercolor.  I put down watercolor first, put wax paper on top and then painted white gouache  on the light areas.  I started adding some color.  I darkened the background.  The flamingo needs more color and darks which will be easier after a day of drying.

Quick watercolor.  Wet the paper, added green, yellow, and some magenta..  Let that dry.  Came back and added more color, values, and salt.  painted yellow and a little green over the background (to mute the salt texture a little).  It needs a little more values and details, but is close to complete.

I worked a little more on the mouth (still needs a little more...) added hair and worked on the coat (added shadows).  It is close to done - will add more details and fix a few things.

Aqueous Acrylics (April 2013)

Acrylic bubble wrap texture.  Wet surface, drop in color, place bubble wrap on top, put a book on top of that, allow to dry.

Acrylic on masonite,  Today I added the leaves.  I mixed a bright green (pthalo green and yellow).  I painted all the leaves the bright green (except there is one I missed...).  After that dried I used several mixtures of green, yellow, white, blue, and a little magenta.  I worked on the leaves adding highlights, shadows, and details.  Remember the separate the leaves (I used darks and lights).  I allowed some of the background to show through.  I worked on the brown part on the underside of the leaves.  I mixed a brown (magenta, yellow, a little pthalo green)  I painted the leaf brown and added white at the top and blue on the bottom to make it look like it curls.

Acrylic plastic wrap texture.  Wet the surface, drop in color, apply the plastic wrap (you can shape it how you want it), and allow it to dry.  It does not usually require a book on top.

Acrylic wax paper texture.  Wet the surface, drop in color, crinkle the wax paper, lay it on top, put a book on top.  This must have a book on it or there will most likely be little to no texture.

I added some darks, lights, color, and details.  A few areas still need work and I need to tone down the texture on his jaw that I put on today.

4/23/13

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  Background for flower project.  I worked on a wet surface and added greens and yellows.

Acrylic.  I used a lot of white today to add hair to the main and a lot of details to the face.  I also used a white wash to soften the edges of some shadows and to fix a few areas in the background.  I added yellow to the background after the white fixed areas had dried.

Watercolor.  I added more dark and then used gouache to add hair to the main and detail on the face.  I also used gouache to soften some shadows.

Photo for the next project.

Tuesday Morning

Colored pencil on maroon mat board.  I used white, canary yellow, scarlet lake, crimson red, and black so far.  I layered the white first then the yellow and then the red paying attention to values.  After that I added the black and then dotted it with white and added some red as well.

Acrylic.  This is the second layer to make a background for the butterfly.  I wet the canvas panel and added in some greens and yellows.  I used white for the spots, adding them when it was still wet so they would be soft.  I added leaf outlines and stems.  I also splattered white, yellow, and red paint.  I will add the butterfly on top.

NCBG acrylic and gouache April 2013

Acrylic, local color.  The first layer was painted flat with the color of the object (local color).  Later I added values and started adding details.  It is in the beginning stages.

Acrylic, value study.  This was painted as a value study, monochromatic, first (I used red).  Then I added color and started adding details as well.  It is in the beginning stages.

Acrylic exercises

Acrylic, fairly far along.  I used both value study and local color methods in this piece.
