Sertoma CPE May and June 2017

I worked on her neck, chin, and cheek area as well as filled in the hair.  The hair is the next thing that needs refining work.

A value study with cream and white on dark grey mat board.

After the value study was done I use terra cotta, canary yellow, spanish orange, cadmium orange hue, scarlet lake to add color lightly all over the elephant. Then I use more terra cotta and black to add darks (I tried indigo, dark brown, and then black grape - they did not work well so I switched to black).  I continued to use white to refine and add highlights as well as any of the colors as needed.  I started adding the water (need to finish) with white and a little true blue.  Also added a little true blue to the tusks and mouth.

Sertoma CPE May and June 2017

Used terra cotta, peach, light peach, white, dark brown, black grape, scarlet lake, spanish orange, grayed lavender to add in the form and details of the fave.  Pay attention to the values, the highlights and shadows.  I worked mostly on the top and front of the face and started adding dark to the hair.

Used cream and whote to do a value study on dark grey mat board.

Example 2 from another class.

Sertoma CPE May and June 2017

I worked on the stem using canary yellow, dark green, pomegranate, yellow chartreuse, a little indigo, and white. I worked on the triangles (not sure what to call them) using yellow chartreuse, pomegranate, black grape, white, and a little indigo.

I worked a little more on the grapes adding some dark with pomegranate and black grape. I worked on the stem using canary yellow and spanish orange, terra cotta, pomegranate, dark green, black grape, white, indigo.  I worked on the shadows using pomegrante, canary yellow, black grape, true blue, scarlet lake.  I varied the shadow by lifting in a few areas and adding yellow.

This is colored pencil with a solvent (Goo Gone Gel although there are many other solvents that can be used) on Stonehenge off white paper.  I chose true blue and scarlet lake (any colors will work).  I showed you how to shade with the pencil and then melt with the solvent (did this in the hair). I showed you how to sand the pencil in a jar lid and melt it with solvent to create colored pencil "paint" (you can use sand paper or a small strainer to sand the pencil).  Then you paint the subject with a brush.  I did the face this way.  I also used the "paint" colored pencil to splatter.

This is a past project.  I did the entire first layer in aquamarine (not quite finished here).

Then I did a second layer with oranges and yellows and splattered with different colors as well.  These first 2 layers are done with solvent and are under drawings.

DAC Intermediate drawing based WC plants March, April, May 2017

Painted a little more, added the back grape and a few more shadows

Worked more on this at the top adding some darks and details.

Did more on the monochromatic/value study part.

This is for the class on space.  Wanted to show depth using things such as placement, overlapping, size, color, and detail.  These are very detailed flowers so I wanted to show how the artist can use editing by removing some of the extra flowers and excess detail.

Sertoma CPE May and June 2017

Colored pencil on tan Strathmore paper.  I started with white and did the light parts of the stem and the highlights on the flower part of the asparagus.  I used canary yellow on the stem and bottom of the triangles.  I did pomegranate on the tips of the triangles.

Colored pencil on tan sanded pastel paper (UART).  On the grapes I did a light layer of canary yellow, a light layer of pomegranate, a light layer of black grape in the dark areas, a light to medium layer of white all over (to blend).  Using the same colors except the yellow I layered it again paying attention to the values.  I used white heavily in the highlights. I added some scarlet lake to some warmer red areas.

Worked on this a little more at home.

Worked on this a little more at home.

Worked more on the monochromatic part so that it would be ready for glazing color over the under painting.

Started glazing color over the under painting.  I glazed a few petals an a leaf.

Painted upright, wet on dry. The first pass was yellow (both warm and cool), ultramarine blue, and purple.  I was careful to keep the blue and purple out of the petals.  I painted top to bottom and loose.  I used yellow for the petals and a mixed orange for the shadows of the petals. I mixed brown for the center and later a darker brown and then a warm yellow.  I did this in layers, letting them dry between painting sessions.  I mixed a green for the leaves and stem.  I used a little red for the darkest parts of the petals.

Vet class

This is the second bird on the purple sanded pastel paper.  I used white first and did a value  under drawing, then used grayed lavender, pomegranate, black (beak and eye), black grape, true blue, indigo blue, canary yellow (eye), spanish orange (eye), and more white.

This is the first bird on grey sanded pastel paper.
