Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  Background for flower project.  I worked on a wet surface and added greens and yellows.

Acrylic.  I used a lot of white today to add hair to the main and a lot of details to the face.  I also used a white wash to soften the edges of some shadows and to fix a few areas in the background.  I added yellow to the background after the white fixed areas had dried.

Watercolor.  I added more dark and then used gouache to add hair to the main and detail on the face.  I also used gouache to soften some shadows.

Photo for the next project.

Tuesday Morning

Colored pencil on maroon mat board.  I used white, canary yellow, scarlet lake, crimson red, and black so far.  I layered the white first then the yellow and then the red paying attention to values.  After that I added the black and then dotted it with white and added some red as well.

Acrylic.  This is the second layer to make a background for the butterfly.  I wet the canvas panel and added in some greens and yellows.  I used white for the spots, adding them when it was still wet so they would be soft.  I added leaf outlines and stems.  I also splattered white, yellow, and red paint.  I will add the butterfly on top.

NCBG acrylic and gouache April 2013

Acrylic, local color.  The first layer was painted flat with the color of the object (local color).  Later I added values and started adding details.  It is in the beginning stages.

Acrylic, value study.  This was painted as a value study, monochromatic, first (I used red).  Then I added color and started adding details as well.  It is in the beginning stages.

Acrylic exercises

Acrylic, fairly far along.  I used both value study and local color methods in this piece.

Jackson, TN Mixed Media Workshop

Colored pencil over acrylic.  I worked on this more since the workshop.

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  I worked on this more since we did it in class.

Continuing Watercolor (Sept/Oct 2012)

I worked on this quite a bit since class.  It needs a little more work (there are a few unfinished areas), but it is close to complete.

Mixed Media (Jan/Feb 2013)

Colored pencil over acrylic.  The acrylic was painted and then Acrylic Ground for Pastel was applied.  It dries almost transparent.  Then I drew colored pencil on top.

Aqueous Acrylics (April 2013)

I added the front hair, the 'Mohawk' onto the zebra.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April 2013)

I showed some gouache on this (adding some dark over white gouache) and I have worked on a few leaves and petals as well.

Added darks and shadows to the hat and scarf as well as a glaze of yellow.  I painted the glasses, bright first.  After that was dry I toned them down with a gray watercolor and later added an area of gouache.  I reshaped the earring with white gouache and later painted it with blue (cobalt).  I used a dark red to add shadows and details to the coat.  Then I added more yellow.  I wet and then painted in cobalt (very light) to the background.  I added more shadows and detail to the face.  I added blue shadows to the hair.  It all needs some refining, but it's going in the right direction.

Aqueous Acrylics (April 2013)

I started adding the white acrylic paying attention to the values.

I painted white over 2 distracting orange areas and then later added a glaze of yellow.  I added the stripes with a variety of mixed darks and black and dropped in color as well.  I paid attention to the values.  I added some shadows with a mixed grey and later softened the edges with white.  I added some white hair to the mane.  I have a few areas to finish on the stripes and 'mohawk'.

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic on a canvas panel.  I have worked on the stripes that had no dark.

Jackson, Tn Mixed Media Workshop

Acrylic on primed masonite prepped with Absorbent Ground.  I have started to glaze the background with yellow and blue glaze on the leaves.

I have glazed more yellow.

4/16/13

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic on a canvas panel.  I started adding the stripes (paying attention to values and adding different colors to the black).  I started adding shadows as well.  I need to finish the stripes!

Watercolor.  I started adding the stripes paying attention to values and color.  I also added shadows.

Tuesday Morning

Acrylic on a canvas panel.  This is the background (the bottom layer) for the butterfly.  I wet the panel, dropped in various greens and a little magenta and added salt (remember to add salt when it's shiny, not a puddle).

Watercolor.  I added more values and details to the fish and pads and a little to the water.

Continuing Watercolor (March/April 2013)

This painting started with the face.  I wet the skin area and added color in the dark areas gently guiding it (I mixed burnt sienna and permanent rose for the skin).  I let it dry and then made a second pass on dry paper.  I added the skin color, a small amount of pigment in a lot of water,  to the dark areas and guided it.  After that was dry I wet the scarf and hat area and dropped in color (purple, permanent rose, aureolin yellow).  I then added salt (when the area was shiny, not a puddle).  I pulled out the little spiky areas on the edges while the paint was still wet.  I could have done that with the water during the initial wetting of the area.

Today I worked some on the left upper wing adding highlights with gouache and color to the 'black' area.  On the bottom left wing I lifted some of the dark and added color (for more values).  I also added some white.  I worked on the background adding more to the dandelions and muting some of the background contrasts.  I added a shadow the the butterfly body and white areas on  its head.

Acrylic on primed masonite prepped with flat house paint (or gesso).  I wet the surface, dropped in color, and added salt when it was ready.  Ready is while still shiny but not puddles.  After it dried I removed the salt.  This is the background/under-painting for the magnolia.

Acrylic on primed masonite prepped with Absorbent Ground.  I wet the surface, dropped in color, and added salt when it was ready.  Ready is while still shiny but not puddles.  After it dried I removed the salt. I transferred the drawing and started adding white to the petals.  I have also started to glaze the background with yellow and blue and blue glaze on the leaves.  I will show this all in the next class.

Acrylic on a canvas panel.  I lightly sanded the panel (most prepared canvases these days are too 'plastic'), transferred the drawing, wet the background and dark stripes, and dropped in yellow and orange.  This is color that will show through as we layer more on top.

4/9/13

Tuesday Afternoon

Acrylic.  After transferring the drawing I wet areas and added the yellow green to the background and all areas that will be dark in the final piece.

Watercolor.  I wet the background and the areas that will be dark.  I dropped in yellow green, green, and purple.

Tuesday Morning

Pen & Ink on bristol board (along with my finger prints, lol).  I used pointillism, scumbling, and some cross hatching.

Watercolor.  I added the fish and the water lilies.  I worked on the water.  A few of the lily pads need to be laid down - they appear to be sticking up.  I will work on that next class.

Gouache Value Study

Gouache Value Study demo from class.

Local  Color gouache example, the demo from class.  This was done by painting the subject matter the 'local' color (the color it is) - this starts as two dimensional and flat.  Form and detail are added later.  This is the first pass with color.

Local  Color gouache example, the demo from class.  This is after the second pass.  I added red and reddish brown to the 'petals' (which I learned are not petals...) for dark values and white for light values.  I added lights and darks and some detail and color (red, yellow, white) to the brown area.

Value Study gouache example, the demo from class.  This is the first pass - I used the perm. rose and a little lemon yellow  mix to paint in the dark values.  I worked pretty wet.

Value Study gouache example, the demo from class.  This is the second pass - I painted lemon yellow over the value painting that was there.  I painted brown (a mixture) in the middle area and later added detail with white and yellow.
