Continuing Watercolor (March and April 2014)

The edges between the background and the subject matter were gently cleaned with a brush and some water and lightly rubbing them to soften.  I did a few more petals,  I added some texture to the leaves and added a few more leaves.  I need to do the stem.

I added details and some darks as well as the stem (mixed a dark brown with burnt sienna and indigo and I had to add a bit of alizarin as well)

I worked on the skirt.  I dampened the skirt and added values using indigo and cobalt.  I cleaned up the background near the front basket and added a bit of negative painting to start bringing out the flowers there.  I added skin color and shape (I mixed Rose and aureolin for the skin a a bit of brown as well).  I mixed a brown for the hair and used that and yellow for the hair..  I dampened the back basket and used a brown and some cobalt to make a basket texture.  I will sharpen it up later (t is not done).

Aqueous Acrylic and Gouache (March and April 2014)

Acrylic.  I wet the 'shell' part and added purple, green, and brown.  I used a dark brown for the stem.  It needs the details which I will add next week.

Gouache.  I added little details, I added some highlights and cleaned up the edges of the petals with white.  I added red tips to the leaves and red details to the petals.  I brought the dark down a bit (may need to do it a bit more).  I would do the same with the acrylic version.

Acrylic on canvas panel (possible background for the old car).  I wet the panel, dropped in color, added salt (fine salt and large salt).  Add salt when it's shiny, but not a puddle for best results.

Gouache on masonite (possible background for the old car).  The masonite was primed with Kilz 2 primer first.  Then I added a bit of water and Absorbent Ground (Golden Acrylic product).  I wet the surface, dropped in color,  and added salt (fine salt and large salt).  Add salt when it's shiny, but not a puddle for best results.

Acrylic on a canvas panel (possible background for the egret).  I wet the panel, dropped in color, and laid the plastic wrap on the wet paint moving it around a bit until I liked the textures.  Allow this to dry before removing.

Acrylic.  Rubber cement.  This is after 2 layers of rubber cement and paint.  Start by loosely dribbling rubber cement, allow to dry, paint a light color, dry, dribble more rubber cement, dry, paint more color, dry, and so on.  I do 3-5 layers and then remove the rubber cement.

Continuing Watercolor (March & April 2014)

I added a few more leaves.  They still need a bit more work.  I added another petal or two.  I wet the background and dropped in very light versions of cobalt and a light beige color (burnt sienna and aureolin, I think) and a little green.

I wet the husks, dropped in purple (alizarin and indigo) and green (indigo and aureolin) and a bit of beige (burnt sienna and aurolin maybe...).  I then added salt when it was shiny but not a puddle.  It still needs work on details, the shadow (ugly green/blue color on mine), and the stem.

The colors I used were Indigo, aureolin, and alizarin in various mixtures and as they are.  I used the masking fluid (the Masquepen) on the wheel spokes.  I wet the background, I then dropped the color in, very dark by the face and head.  I added salt in a few areas, dots of color, dots of water to make blossoms.  There is one area to fix above the front basket and overall a few adjustments may be needed.

Aqueous Acrylics & Gouache (March & April 2014)

Acrylic.  I wet the middle section and dropped in the colors I had mixed (the green and purple) keeping it light at the top.  I then added yellow and the purple texture marks and shadows as well.  I did this all on the first pass.

Gouache.  I wet the background and did an initial pass of green, blue, and yellow and a bit of red/purple.  It was on the medium dark side.  After it dried I started at the top and added much darker color allowing some from underneath to peak through.  This stopped right at the flower and I do need to continue it down getting a bit lighter as I go.  I would do the similar with acrylic working a bit faster and/or making sure to keep the paper wet.

Gouache.  This is an extra value study (left) and local color (right).  On the value study I demonstrated doing the value study on the background as well as the subject when you know the background will be dark.

Continuing Watercolor (Mar. & Apr. 2014)

I started with the leaves.  Wet each side and drop in color - green (indigo and aureolin) and a bit of red (perm. alizarin) plus yellow (aureolin) down the middle.  Later, after it was dry, I went back on a few and started adding darks to add form to the leaves.  One leaf on the left has salt which can be added for texture.  For the flower I first painted a very light permanent alizarin.  After it was dry I went back and started adding dark values (with alizarin and a mixture of alizarin and green to darken the alizarin)

I wet the middle of the tomatillo.  I used two mixtures of green (pthalo blue and aureolin, aureolin and cobalt) and dropped them in leaving it almost white near the stem.  I dropped in a dark  for the shadows and spots.  I added a shadow below the tomatillo as well, wetting it first.

Aqueous Acrylics & Gouache (Mar.&Apr. 2014)

Acrylic.  Local Color.  This started by painting areas the local color (the color that they are).  I painted the flower petals in the back yellow, the petals in the front a yellow-orange, and the stem and leaves green for the first pass.  I let this dry and  for the second pass used white for highlights and to lighten areas and added red to the stem.  I would use the saem approach for gouache.

Gouache.  Value study.  I mixed a reddish brown and painted the values only with the one color for the first pass.  For the second pass I added the color over the value study.  For the third pass I started adding highlights and lightening areas with white and using dark colors for the darker values.  I would use the same approach for acrylic.

Continuing Watercolor (Jan. & Feb. 2014)

I worked more on the water drops and the hair.  I softened a few shadows under the glasses softly with a brush and water and paper towel.  I added a few more darks to the hair.  I worked on the ear a bit adding shadows.  I will keep picking away at the water drops until I don't want to anymore, but this is close to complete.

I started with yellow (aureolin) on the flower part dropping a little orange (aureolin and rose) on the ends of the back petals.  I then moved to the stem wetting it first and then using green (pthalo and aureolin) and maroon (rose and a little pthalo green).  I then did the leaves at the base of the flower putting in green, maroon on the tips and some edged, and yellow in the middle.  I used orange to tint and detail the front petals on the flower. I added dots of texture to the stem.  Later I wet the background and dropped in green (pthalo and aureolin) and indigo.  I used more water to make the colors more transparent on the bottom background.  Some of the green got into the stem so I will need to redo some of the red.

Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache (Jan. & Feb. 2014)

Acrylic.  I defined the face a bit more after mixing various browns.  I added white to the hair and plan to add yellow over the white.  I wan t to work on the hair a bit more adding wispy bits.  The face for what I want needs more detail.  When I get to it I will post it here.  I am excited about this one.  There are some interesting things going on.

Gouache.  This needs more work, but I like the feel it has.  I worked on the face with various browns.  I mixed a dark and started the hair.  It needs refining.

Gouache.  This is the rubber cement painting after 3 layers and the rubber cement removed.

Continuing Watercolor (Jan. & Feb. 2014)

I first worked on adding darks to the eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair.  I added a bit more skin color and texture.  I overdid the eyelashes and had to scrub them out a bit.  I let it all dry and then removed the masking.  I then started working on the tiny shadows and details on the water drops.

Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache (Jan. & Feb. 2014)

Acrylic.  I glazed over some formerly white areas and added a few new ones as well as added a few darks.

Gouache.  I added a few white areas to lighten and glazed over some white areas as well.  I added some veins.

Acrylic.  I removed the rubber cement and started working loosely on the face, hair, and shirt.  It needs highlights, darks, and details at this point (I will demo to this point on the gouache version tomorrow).

Aqueous Acrylics & Gouache (Nov. and Dec. 2013)

Acrylic.  I fixed a few things, tweaked it a tiny bit, and took a better photo.

Tuesday Morning Class

Colored pencil on burgundy mat board.  I finished this for my mom.

Continuing Watercolor - We will meet from 1:00 - 3:30 tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4 in the Cardinal room (the regular room as luckily it's free).

The make-up class today for Continuing watercolor is cancelled due to ice and snow (again) and will be rescheduled.  The extra class for Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache has been cancelled.  If there is room for another to be scheduled I will let you know. 

Make-up Days - Snow Days

Aqueous Acrylic and Gouache - Since many of you missed classes (for snow and other reasons) I will hold an extra class on Monday, March 3 from 10 - 12 (notice the time change).

Continuing Watercolor (Jan. and Feb. 2014)

I added more dark to the beak on the swan and reflection.  I worked more on the feather textures and shadow areas.  Those marks tend to be line, dots, and scribbles - more like drawing.  

I added lots of fur texture marks - lines and dots.  I varied the colors and values of these marks.  I worked on the eye and added dark whiskers (my background is light and light whiskers would not show well).

I used a skin color (you can use aureolin and quin. rose or something similar) and did a light value study for the first pass.  The second pass I mixed a few colors - skin color + cobalt to make a purple, skin color + burnt sienna to make a darker skin color.  I then went around with these colors to add more punch to the shadow areas.  Then I used cobalt and painted the water areas.  I mixed a black (pthalo green and perm. alizarin) and painted the glasses. Notice the value changes in the glasses...  I added a little black to the water on the glasses as well.

Aqueous Acrylics & Gouache (Jan. and Feb. 2014)

Acrylic (will do the same with gouache).  I have added details.  The white areas are how to lighten an area (two with texture and one in an area on the side of a leaf and one on a small edge).  Next class I will glaze a color on top.  I have also added details such as veins and textures.  For the veins I used white for the vein and glazed on top and added a shadow of dark.

Gouache (will do the same with acrylic).  I worked mostly on the ear and eye and back of the head.  I have started adding darks with highlighted areas on top.  I have added textures (fur lines and dots) with white.  When I add details and textures the paint is on the 'dry' side (just wet enough to move). 

Acrylic.  I have finished 2 passes of the rubber cement/paint cycle.  I have added the last rubber cement (3rd pass) and need to add paint.  If I do this before the next class I will post it.  After the 3rd pass is complete I plan to remove the rubber cement.  The next class I plan to start on the face and hair/clothing details.

Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache (Jan./Feb. 2014)

Gouache.  I added some details (left side especially).

Gouache.  I have added a layer of white over the dark.  It of course needs more work.

Acrylic.  I added another layer of rubber cement and after that dried more color.  I let the color run by tilting the panel.

Gouache.  I added the first pass of color.
