Make-up Days - Snow Days

Aqueous Acrylic and Gouache - Since many of you missed classes (for snow and other reasons) I will hold an extra class on Monday, March 3 from 10 - 12 (notice the time change).

Continuing Watercolor (Jan. and Feb. 2014)

I added more dark to the beak on the swan and reflection.  I worked more on the feather textures and shadow areas.  Those marks tend to be line, dots, and scribbles - more like drawing.  

I added lots of fur texture marks - lines and dots.  I varied the colors and values of these marks.  I worked on the eye and added dark whiskers (my background is light and light whiskers would not show well).

I used a skin color (you can use aureolin and quin. rose or something similar) and did a light value study for the first pass.  The second pass I mixed a few colors - skin color + cobalt to make a purple, skin color + burnt sienna to make a darker skin color.  I then went around with these colors to add more punch to the shadow areas.  Then I used cobalt and painted the water areas.  I mixed a black (pthalo green and perm. alizarin) and painted the glasses. Notice the value changes in the glasses...  I added a little black to the water on the glasses as well.

Aqueous Acrylics & Gouache (Jan. and Feb. 2014)

Acrylic (will do the same with gouache).  I have added details.  The white areas are how to lighten an area (two with texture and one in an area on the side of a leaf and one on a small edge).  Next class I will glaze a color on top.  I have also added details such as veins and textures.  For the veins I used white for the vein and glazed on top and added a shadow of dark.

Gouache (will do the same with acrylic).  I worked mostly on the ear and eye and back of the head.  I have started adding darks with highlighted areas on top.  I have added textures (fur lines and dots) with white.  When I add details and textures the paint is on the 'dry' side (just wet enough to move). 

Acrylic.  I have finished 2 passes of the rubber cement/paint cycle.  I have added the last rubber cement (3rd pass) and need to add paint.  If I do this before the next class I will post it.  After the 3rd pass is complete I plan to remove the rubber cement.  The next class I plan to start on the face and hair/clothing details.

Aqueous Acrylic & Gouache (Jan./Feb. 2014)

Gouache.  I added some details (left side especially).

Gouache.  I started to add texture, values, and details on the chicks head.

Gouache.  I have added a layer of white over the dark.  It of course needs more work.

Acrylic.  I added another layer of rubber cement and after that dried more color.  I let the color run by tilting the panel.

Gouache.  I added the first pass of color.

Gouache.  I did another round of rubber cement, allowed it to dry, and then more color.

Continuing Watercolor (January and February 2014)

I darkened the top water to pop the swan forward and add contrast, added some shadows/darks to the leaves, I added shadows/darks and details to the swan, I added some dark to the water below the swan, I added orange (alizarin and aureolin) and black (pthalo green and alizarin) to the beak.  I did a little scrubbing.

I added details and darks to the cat.  I added texture to the fur and the cats face (not complete yet).

This is the new project transferred and with masking fluid.  I added masking fluid in order to keep the white areas in the water so it will retain it's 'sparkly' appearance.

Acrylic.  I transferred the drawing, swirled rubber cement in the hair and background areas, and painted with acrylic (light and watered down) over those areas.  I will repeat this 3-5 more times.

Gouache.  This is the drawing transferred with rubber cement 'swirled' onto the hair and background areas.

Gouache (you can do this with either medium).  This is a rubber cement technique for making backgrounds.  I swirled rubber cement onto the paper.  Let it dry, and painted gouache onto the paper.  I plan to do this 3-5 more times.

Continuing Watercolor (Jan. & Feb. 2014)

I lightly shaded the swan.  I  worked on the reflection area and added the leaves in yellow and orange with a little dark in the middle.  After the leaves were dry I added a glaze of green over them.  Keep the strokes in the water horizontal, it helps.

I worked on the head of the cat very dry adding quite a bit of detail as I went.  I did the back of the body very quickly.  I mixed and used several browns.  There is more to do, but it is coming along.

I re-demoed the chick, this is the first layer.  I worked damp (rather than wet) on the chick and dropped in the various colors and values.

I re-demoed the egg.  I kept the pencil lines mostly out.  I dampened the egg and worked the color in the shadow pattern.

Continuing Watercolor (January & February 2014)

I mixed a blue green (pthalo blue and pthalo green) and added in a little burnt sienna to tone it down a bit.  I also wet some indigo.  I then wet the background.  I put the color in using horizontal strokes.  I varied the values.  I added some stokes of yellow as well in areas. 

I wet the chick and added color paying attention to the values.  I added the eye, fixing it and a few other areas on the second pass with white gouache.  I added more texture, detail and value moving round the chick.  I wet the bottom ground/shadow to anchor the chick and dropped in a brown and a green and allowed some of this onto the chicks feet.  It needs a bit more work.

I wet the egg and used a brown color to lay in the shadow area feathering the shadow area outward.  After it dried I added the cast shadow underneath the egg.

Acrylic on a canvas panel/board.  I wet the panel, dropped in color, and placed plastic wrap on it 'scrunching' it to make the texture.  I removed the plastic wrap after it was dry.

Acrylic on watercolor paper.  I wet the paper, dropped in the color, and added salt.  Add the salt when it is shiny, not a puddle.  Allow to dry and swipe off the salt.  This is the background for the white cat.

Gouache on watercolor paper.  I made a medium dark color and painted the egg shape flat color.  We will shade it with white gouache.  We will do the same with acrylic.
