White over dark or white over backgrounds with or without glazing. This can be done with gouache or gouache and watercolor or acrylic. Sometimes I finish with pen and ink and/or colored pencil on top

White gouache over a salt texture gouache background on multi media paper. The color is all colored pencil on top. I did no glazes, just white gouache and colored pencil. |

This is white gouache over a watercolor salt textured background on student grade watercolor paper (remember I make and keep piles of backgrounds in watercolor, acrylic, and gouache). I transferred the drawing (used white transfer paper) and painted a value study with the white starting with the lightest area and pulling the paint out. After the paint was dry, I glazed watercolor over it. I then re established some of the whites. This needs a bit more work, some refining and details, but is getting close to complete. I could stop here, but then I would miss the fun. |

White gouache on un-stretched canvas prepped with black gesso. I transferred the drawing with white transfer paper. This will most likely be finished black and white. I like the effect. |

White gouache on un-stretched canvas prepped with black gesso. This is further along, it has areas that need work (such as the hair for example). |

White gouache over an acrylic salt textured background on masonite. The masonite was prepped with Kilz 2 primer, then absorbent ground (could skip this step, but I like the ground), then acrylic with salt, then Liquitex Clear Gesso, then white gouache. I did this to try the grounds and to put gouache over acrylic which I don't do without the ground. The drawing was transferred with white transfer paper. I have just begun here. |

This is just a little further along. The color and light difference in the two is due to photography and time of day, etc.
