4/19/11

The acrylic barn - I added the barn on top of the trees by using transfer paper and then painting it.  I used 4 'colors' - brown, light brown, dark brown and white.  Pay attention to the values - we will add more color later.
Colored pencil barn - I worked on the barn using sienna brown, dark brown, true blue, and magenta (and a little cream).  I started adding some dark values in the trees (dark green).  It has a long way to go...

4/12/11

The colored pencil drawing.  I shaded the barn and trees and used Turpnoid to melt it all for the 'underpainting.'  The next step is to shade the values, color, and details.
The acrylic barn painting.  I first painted the sky a gradation from dark (at the top) to lighter towards the bottom.  After that dried I added the grass and tree backgrounds.  We will transfer the barn next and start adding details to the trees and grass.  This is the 'underpainting.'
The watercolor barn painting.  I removed the masking fluid and rubber cement.  I started working on the trees behind the barn, re-edging the barn and working on the 'sky holes' to make them look more natural.  I will need to re-transfer the details of the barn as I lost most of it.

4/5/11

This is the start of the acrylic barn painting - this may be my best work yet...  (we will start the acrylic project next week).
This is the start to the watercolor barn painting.  Here are the steps: 1. transfer the drawing, 2. mask the barn and the tree limbs (I used masking fluid and rubber cement) and let dry, 3. wet the paper and do a blue wash for the sky and sky holes (I used cobalt) and let dry, 4. mask the 'sky holes' and let dry, 5. wet and paint the trees and grass areas (I used sap green, cobalt blue & aureolin yellow mixed, cobaly blue, indigo blue, new gamboge yellow, and alizarin crimson).
This is the start to the colored pencil barn painting.  I transferred the drawing and shaded the sky and 'sky holes' with true blue, indigo, and cloud blue.  I then melted the pencil using Turpenoid (odorless turpentine).

3/30/11

Next Class project
The colored pencil piece.  I added a few more shadows on the face, hat and shirt.  It needs to be darker in the background and it needs more details.
The watercolor project.  I added a purple wash with yellow 'dots' to the blue background, I added a few more shadows to the shirt and face and lifted out the back of the hat.  The hat needs work and maybe a tiny bit more detail on the shirt.
Acrylic project.  I added a glaze of yellow over the blue in the background and worked on the hat.  I only did a tiny bit to the shirt and added some shadows to the face.  I needs a little more work (and some ironing, sorry about the wrinkles, one of which is on the nose)

3/22/11

Watercolor - added a dark blue background, it will need more washes of color.  Added more dark values to the shirt.  The hat needs more detail.  The face needs more values, I added some dark values and warmer tones, but it needs more shadow.  We talked about hard edges, soft edges, and lost edges.
Acrylic - dark blue background, it will need more layers of color and the painting needs some soft and lost edges (to 're-attach' her to the painting).  Added more light and dark values to the shirt.  The hat needs more detail and the face needs more values.
